Buddhisme Ubah Hidup Terpidana Mati

Singapura – Setelah ditangkap pada tahun 2007 dan divonis hukuman mati oleh pengadilan Singapura karena memperdagangkan narkoba, Yong Vui Kong, 23, seorang pemuda warga Sabah, Malaysia yang kini sedang menunggu pelaksanaan hukuman matinya, mempelajari Buddhisme dan mulai mempraktikkan meditasi.

Setelah ia masuk penjara, Vui Kong telah mengalami perubahan yang menyeluruh dalam dirinya. Ia mempraktikkan Buddhisme dan menghabiskan banyak waktu untuk melantunkan naskah Buddhis dan bermeditasi, bangun setiap hari pada jam 4 pagi. Ia juga menjadi seorang vegetarian dan mengambil nama baru dari nama Buddhis, yaitu Nan Di Li.

 

“Ia merasa senang bahwa ia telah ditangkap karena jika tidak, ia mungkin masing melakukan hal-hal yang buruk,” kata Yun Leong, 26, kakak laki-laki dari Vui Kong, seperti yang dilansir The Star (23/1).

Kisah Yong Vui Kong yang ditangkap dan menanti hukuman gantung di usia masih muda, serta kehidupan keluarganya yang kekurangan, mendapatkan simpati banyak kalangan yang menginginkan memberikan kesempatan kedua bagi Yong Vui Kong. Kampanye usaha penyelamatan Vui Kong pun dilakukan.

Sejumlah besar blog dibuat untuk mendukung Vui Kong, dan sudah 24.280 orang telah masuk ke halaman Facebook “SaveVuiKong”. Sebanyak 109.346 orang menandatangani sebuah petisi yang di kupulkan di jalan-jalan dan internet.

Koordinator Kampanye Selamatkan Vui Kong, Ngeow Chow Ying, percaya bahwa penderitaan Vui Kong telah menyentuh hati setiap orang.

 

“Saya pikir karena latar belakang dirinya dan faktanya bahwa ia telah menyesal. Saya tahu orang-orang mendukung hukuman mati untuk kejahatan narkoba tersebut namun merasa simpati terhadap Vui Kong,” kata wanita tesebut.

Dalam surat terakhirnya (surat ke-12) yang diberikan kepada Yetian, salah seorang anggota Kampanye Selamatkan Vui Kong, dan yang di lansir oleh Malaysiakini (10/7), Vui Kong menuliskan perasaannya dalam menghadapi mati.

“Sebelum saya mulai, saya ingin mengucapkan terima kasih kepada semuanya karena membaca surat ke-12 ini. Waktu berlalu begitu cepat, ini akan menjadi surat terakhir saya.”

“Saya berharap bahwa saat kalian selesai membaca surat ini, meskipun apapun yang terjadi kepada saya, kalian akan terus mendukung kampanye “Kami Percaya Kesempatan Kedua” (We Believe in Second Chances).

“Untuk surat terakhirku, saya ingin menulis tentang bagaimana perasaan saya menghadapi kematian.”

“Pertama, saya merasa bahwa keberadaan hukuman mati bukanlah demi pembalasan, melainkan sebuah cara untuk memungkinan sang pelaku untuk memahami, dan sepenuhnya menghadapi kesalahan yang telah ia lakukan.”

“Ambil saya sebagai contoh, saya benar-benar bersyukur bahwa saya tertangkap, karenanya memungkinkan saya untuk memahami makna dan tujuan sebenarnya dari hidup, dan hal itu telah memungkinkan saya untuk menemukan kekuatan dalam diri saya.”

“Beberapa hari yang lalu, pengacara saya, M. Ravi, mengunjungi saya. Ia memberitahukan saya bahwa ia akan mengirimkan banding terakhir ke presiden Singapura dalam beberapa hari. Itu akan menjadi kesempatan terakhir saya.”

“Pada malam sebelum eksekusi dilakukan, banyak para terpidana mati tidak akan memiliki kesempatan untuk mengucapkan selamat tinggal kepada keluarga mereka. Bagi sebagian besar dari mereka, mereka tidak dalam bergairah untuk memikirkan hal yang lain selain rasa nyeri dan sakit sebelum hukuman terakhir mereka dijatuhkan.”

“Untuk sebagian besar terpidana mati, saat mereka dibawa keluar dari sel mereka, mereka akan kehilangan kendali emosi mereka dan mereka mulai memberontak. Tidak ada sejumlah konseling yang akan dapat menenangkan mereka karena sekali mereka keluar dari sel mereka, mereka tahu tidak ada jalan kembali dan mereka akan pergi selamanya.”

“Tetapi yang paling merasakan penderitaan adalah keluarga mereka. Saya tidak berani membayangkan bagaimana mereka akan merasakan saat mereka menunggu di luar untuk mengambil tubuh dingin dan tak bernyawa dari orang yang mereka cintai.”

Jika besok adalah malam terakhir saya

“Bagi saya, jika besok adalah malam terakhir saya, Saya juga akan tidak memiliki pilihan. Tetapi saya siap untuk menghadapi kenyataannya. Lagi pula, Sayalah orang yang membuat kesalahan, dan saya telah menyesalinya.”

“Apakah saya akan takut? Saya benar-benar tidak tahu. Tetapi saya pikir saya tidak takut karena saya mulai menjadi akrab dengan bagaimana rasanya menghadapi kematian – jangan lupa bahwa dalam empat tahun yang singkat ini, saya telah bersentuhan dengan kematian berkali-kali.”

“Benar, saya telah “mati” beberapa kali sebelumnya. Pada 2007, saat saya tertangkap, dan menemukan Buddhisme yang telah memungkinkan saya untuk “dilahirkan kembali”. Pada 2009, saat saya dijatuhi hukuman mati, dan pengacara saya membantu saya untuk mengajukan banding atas hukuman saya.”

“Saya tidak akan meminta untuk makan malam terakhir saya berupa apapun yang mewah. Saya pikir saya akan mengikuti kegiatan rutinitas bangun di pagi hari untuk melantunkan naskah Buddhis saya dan bermeditasi, diikuti dengan sarapan pagi vegetarian saya sampai malam menjelang, mengenakan pakaian terbaik yang adik perempuan saya bawakan untuk saya, mengucapkan selamat tinggal kepada seluruh para tahanan, dan terakhir bersujud kepada Dewi (Guan Yin ? – ed) untuk menunjukkan penghargaan dan terima kasihku.”

“Tapi saya tidak dapat benar-benar mengekspresikan perasaan saya karena saya benar-benar tidak tahu bagaimana saya akan merasakan saat saya berjalan menuju jerat tersebut.”

Keberuntungan terbesar saya

“Saya telah melalui tahapan di mana saya merasa tersesat, bodoh dan menderita, tetapi karena praktik Buddhisme saya, telah memungkinkan saya untuk membebaskan diri saya.”

“Saya juga bersyukur bahwa banyak anggota masyarakat yang bersedia memaafkan saya. Dapat hidup sampai hari ini adalah keberuntungan terbesar saya.”

“Saya pikir keluarga saya telah menerima saya atas apa yang telah saya lakukan, dan juga menerima apapun kemungkinan yang dihasilkan. Mereka mengambil kenyaanan dalam fakta bahwa saya telah berbah enjadi sebuah daun yang baru, dan bahwa saya telah terus membaca dan mempraktikan Buddhisme.”

“Penderitaan saya juga telah meningkatkan hubungan di antara mereka yang berada di dalam keluarga saya, khususnya saudara-saudara saya. Tetapi saya tetap khawatir suatu saat ibu saya akan mengetahui bahwa saya sudah tidak ada lagi.”

“Saya ingin berterima aksih kepada kalian semua sekali lagi. Saya tidak akan mampu membagikan kisah saya tanpa bantuan kalian. Saya akan berdoa bagi kalian, dan berharap kalian sehat dan berbahagia.”

Sebelum suratnya yang terakhir, Yong Vui Kong telah menulis beberapa surat kepada keluarganya. Ngeow Chow Ying yang membacakan suratnya kepada keluarganya mengatakan bahwa ia mulai menulis surat yang sederhana menanyakan kabar keluarganya. Namun, berlalunya waktu, suratnya mulai menjadi lebih filosofis, dengan kutipan-kutipan dari ajaran Buddhis.

Vui Kong juga sempat menggambar Bodhisattva Ksitigarbha yang diberikan kepada pengacaranya, M. Ravi. Gambar yang dibuatnya selama sebulan itu dibuat dengan pena tinta empat warna.

Korban keadaan

Lahir 23 Januari 1988, Yong Vui Kong adalah anak keenam dari tujuh bersaudara. Kedua orang tuanya bercerai saat usianya 3 tahun, sehingga, Liaw Yueng Kuan, ibunya, terpaksa membesarkan keluarga hanya seorang diri. Dengan upah tak sepadan sejumlah 220 Ringgit Malaysia (+/- 620 ribu Rupiah – ed), ibunya bekerja mencuci piring di warung kaki lima.

Karena situasi yang suram tersebut, hanya Vui Kong dan dua kakak tertuanya yang tinggal bersama ibunya dan kakeknya yang dilaporkan bersikap kasar. Saudara kandung lainnya tinggal dengan kerabat mereka.

Dari semua saudaranya, hanya adik perempuannya. Yong Vui Fung, sekarang berusia 21, yang tamat belajar sampai sekolah menengah tingkat lima.

Kakaknya Leong Yun, 26, seorang pembantu dapur di Singapura yang mengunjunginya di penjara setiap hari Senin.

Menurutnya, ibunya selalu disiksa dan dipukuli oleh kakek mereka. Saudara-saudara lelakinya dipaksa untuk merawat kebun kecil kelapa sawit kakek mereka.

Vui Kong putus sekolah saat ia berusia 11 tahun dan mulai bekerja serabutan, termasuk mencuci mobil untuk 3 Ringgit Malaysia (+/- 8.500 Rupiah – ed) per hari.

Pada suatu saat, ia tinggal dengan seorang teman karena tempat kerja yang jauh dari rumahnya.

Karena gaji yang sangat sedikit, ia memutuskan untuk mencoba peruntungannya di Kuala Lumpur ketika ia berusia 16, mendapatkan pekerjaan sebagai seorang pembantu dapur.

Vui Kong masuk ke “perusahaan yang salah” dan mulai menjual DVD bajakan di Jalan Petaling, dengan penghasilan sekitar 1.000 Ringgit Malaysia (2,8 juta Rupiah – ed) per bulanan, kata Yun Leong.

Di sana ia bertemua dengan “Kakak Besar” yang membelikannya makanan di hotel dan pakaian mahal. Kemudian Vui Kong mulai menjadi penagih hutang sebelum akhirnya mengantarkan “paket khusus”.

Yun Leong mengatakan bahwa adiknya adalah anak yang naïf. Ia tidak tahu banyak tentang hukum dan bosnya berbohong kepadanya, mengatakan kepadanya bahwa menjajakan DVD akan membuatnya masuk penjara selama tujuh tahun, sementara menjajakan narkoba hanya akan membuatnya masuk penjara setidak-tidaknya selama 2 tahun.

Saat itu, ibu mereka menderita depresi dan dengan putus asa Vui Kong mencari uang untuk membantu ibunya.

Tiga hari sebelum ditangkap Vui Kong pergi ke Sandakan untuk merayakan ulang tahun ibunya.

Ia ditangkap pada 2007 karena membawa narkoba jenis heroin seberat 47,27 gram. Saat itu ia berusia 19 tahun, ini berarti ia masih belum dewasa karena di Singapura seseorang dinyatakan dewasa saat berusia 21 tahun.

Voi Kong dijatuhi hukuman mati oleh pengadilan pada tahun 2009. Kini ia menghadapi hukuman gantung dan sedang menunggu harapan terakhirnya, yaitu grasi dari presiden Singapura.[Bhagavant, 15/7/11, Sum]
